Ammi’s Biryani: Your go to place for a weekend food trip!
Food trips are one of the best ways to burst your stress. It is a refreshing activity which opens your mind. Well this was one of those days when food trip was on my mind with biryani ringing in my ears. I can bet everyone in India would know about Biryani. A cuisine that is enjoyed & has a special place in every Indian kitchen. You will find numerous versions of it in India. One of the best places to enjoy biryani cuisine in India is Lucknow and Hyderabad. These cities and the people there have inherited the ancient style of making biryani’s and are known to serve some sumptuous biryani delicacies. It is a dish every Indian can relish.
So if you are living in Pune, the cultural hub of Maharashtra, then which are the places you should go to eat biryani. Pune as a city houses some good food joints where you can hog and be happy. It is a city which enjoys food and does not mind spending on eating out.
For me biryani is all about the aroma, taste, texture and how you present it. In Southern India there is a similar version of this delicacy called Pulao, however the preparation differs a lot. Don’t mistake it for the biryani.
If you are planning a food trip on a weekend you should do a pit-stop at Ammi’s Biryani . Yes, Ammi’s Biryani has been launched in Pune. It’s been a month now and it is buzzing in the town for its flagship dish “Biryani”. Currently they have branches in VimanNagar and Kalyani Nagar. With a humble beginning in Banglaore from their one store in Kormanagala they are now growing and operating in Chennai, Mumbai and Pune. Ammi’s Biryani seems to have cracked the biryani delicacies. Mind you Bangalore houses a lot good briyani places in Kormangla like Hyderabad House, but Ammi’s Biryani which started recently has won some hearts to grown beyond “Bengaluru”.
In Pune I visited their all new outlet in Kalyani nagar(it is opp marakeesh and near Mulik ground) for my review.
Ambience at Ammi’s Biryani
First impression of the outlet, damn impressive. Well made, hygienic, spacious enough to house 25-30 people at a time & gives you an option of home delivery. Well done interiors adds to the experience or you can call it a vibrant biryani outlet.
Food at Ammi’s Biryani
It has a good blend of food options to offer at a biryani place. Enough varieties of biryani veg and non-veg(chicken,mutton and egg), powered with curry roti combinations, side dishes and sweets to end up your meal at Ammi’s Biryani.
As a part of the review I was offered the below dishes
1: Executive Veg Biryani
2: Executive Non-veg biryani(Chicken based)
3: Regular Mutton Biryani
4: Paneer Angara Curry Roti
5: Sweets: Kashmiri Meetha & Matka phirni
To begin, even before all the above dishes were served, I was offered a Sulaimani Chai. It was a good refreshing beverage to start with until your order is being served to you. Basically, a black tea mixed with little lemon juice topped with Pudina leaves. A good starter to stimulate your taste buds.
My first main course meal, veg executive biryani arrived. It serves one and comes along with curds and a small masala mix(tastemaker) packet to be added to the curd as “tastemaker”. The tastemaker reminds me of “pudi” or “podi” powder or chutney which is found in south Indian dishes. The tastemaker gives the curd an awesome spicy yet tangy taste. The biryani was well cooked with pieces of cauliflower, capsicum, carrot and baby corn(don’t know why babycorn made its way in biryani). I was a little surprised to see fewer spices used in the briyani and the rice was moderately grainy. The biryani tastes good and tastemaker mixed curd adds to the flavor.
Up next, chicken based non-veg executive biryani. The biryani rice had the same base taste as veg biryani with chicken pieces(2). However I found this biryani a level up on aroma compared to veg biryani, with a pinch of yellow color to the rice grains. Must say chicken was well cooked and it would serve two people who want to have a light food affair.
The regular mutton biryani came with some additional dishes apart from the biryani rice and 3 mutton pieces. While the taste of the biryani rice remained same throughout all dishes, what stands out in the mutton dish is the side dish, sooji based kheer. The mutton regular dish also comes with some salad options like onion slices, lemon along with curd and its tastemaker. The sooji based sweet dish was well cooked to forcing me to have one more with mild flavor of clove and elaichi. This regular mutton biryani can serve two just enough to suffice your hunger.
The paneer angara curry roti combo is a good addition to the menu. There are other combo choices available. The roti is very similar to the maida parotha or paratha you would find in Kerala. The paneer angara was well cooked which had typical garam masala and pinch of spices to it. It is good option to start with along with the biryani options making it a complete meal for your family.
The sweets served at Ammi’s Biryani were matka phirni(sooji based) topped with almond pieces and Kashmiri meetha(again a sooji based) topped with a flavor of jelly and almonds. The matka phirni is a killer to end your meal. It has the unique taste of ealichi, cloves well cooked in milk to offer an enriching experience to your taste buds. Also it is served chilled which adds to the experience & taste. The kashmiri meetha is a good dish for people who like jelly mixed dishes. The kashmiri meetha had a flavor of pineapple in it.
Overall the biryani taste was uniform in all dishes. Though the rice was moderately grainy, but the best part is it is not heavy on your stomach while you are on a food trip. As an option or suggestion I think introduction of boondi raita and pickle can be served, since Indian’s like it! Ammi’s Biryani also offer a limited number of side dishes which I could not taste due to my time constraints.
My bet would go with the sulaimani chai, chicken biryani and the matka phirni. The tastemaker for the curds gives a good taste to the biryani.
Ammi’s Biryani is your go to place on a food trip for a good hygienic, moderately priced, quick and tasteful experience!
