Pokhara is a tourist paradise of Nepal. It is approx 200 kms west of Kathmandu and lies in Gandaki zone. It is easily accessible by road and flight from Kathmandu.

The Seti Gandaki or the white river is the main river flowing through the city, which with it’s tributaries at many places has created several gorges and canyons in and around the city.

The porous underground of Pokhara valley favours formation of caves and one can find many caves , most famous being under Patale chango (Hell’s Falls) , also popularly known as Devis falls.

On the other hand, right across the road, one can find other aspect of the fall – a long and one of the deepest caves of the region – Gupteshwor Mahadev cave.

Our experience at Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave

We covered it as a part of our day’s tour in pokhara.

It is an open area with long rounded steps from ticket window leading to the main cave.

As we enter the cave , Kamdhenu mukh (Holy Cow) is there. Then we moved ahead within the cave and found the main temple of Shivling within the cave.

We then moved ahead and slowly there was mist flowing all along. Water was trickling down on us as we crossed multiple labrynthine areas of narrowed passages within the cave. I was fearing if the roof of the cave would fall on us. We were getting wet with the water from the fall pouring on us. Though their was light in the cave but the pits and floor and the unknown end along with the interiors of cave was a bit frightening. I wanted to go back but with the thought to resolve the mystery of underground Davis Fall kept me courageous. With little kids, it was not a wise decision unless one is extra careful with kids.

We reached the end of cave and saw slit like opening between the two mountains with Devis fall on the other end. It was a wonderful experience and we all were superexcited to reach here. We clicked a few snaps but mist was right there on our cameras as well.

We rested for a while and started on our way back. It was a little tiring to climb up the steps in the end but the effort was worth the scenic memorable view of this cave. There were iron stairs to reach the end of caves. They were a bit dicey and we had to carefully step down with kids.

I would recommend all to visit this cave if staying in Pokhara but be extra cautious with kids.
