Cellular Jail popularly known as Kala Paani was a colonial prison situated in Andaman Nicobar Islands. Prison was used by the British to exile the political prisoners during the Struggle for independence.

Today this place serves as a National Monument.

This place was easy for British to seclude the rebels from the country. This jail was specially built by the British.

The building had seven wings. Centres of intersection was a tower used by guards to check inmates. Seven wings are like the spokes of cycle. A big bell was used to raise an alarm. Each wing had three floors. The roof was used to keep an eye on inmates.

Diwan Singh Kalepani, Yogendra Shukla and Batukeshwar Dutt were some of the famous inmates of jaol during pre-independence era.

Jail was designed such that the face of a cell faced the wall of other cell.This way prisoners were in isolated confinement.

We were heartbroken to see how atrocious atmosphere that affected our activists. The cells had a ventilation high up in the wall.

Overall experience was very emotional to see the trauma our freedom fighters went through.

Cellular Jail is just half an hour to one hour away from Port Blair. Many bus services and taxis ply to this place
