Gurupurab is Guru Nanak’s Birthday which comes in the month of November. The date depends on the Indian Lunar calendar. This is a three days ceremony. Generally, two days before the ceremony, Akhand Path is performed in Gurudwaras. Few days before Guru Purab, Prabhat Pheris are organized by Sikh people in residential areas where Sikhs and other people from all religions get together very early in the morning and sing religious hymns and songs. Some people also burst crackers.
On the next Sunday of Gurupurab or the day fixed by residential societies, a religious procession is organized in local residential areas of North India which is led by Panj Piare and Palki Sahib carrying Guru Granth Sahib. Palki Sahib is fully decorated with flowers. This is followed by a team of singers singing hymns and brass bands playing different religious tunes. This procession passes through main roads, streets and residential areas. There are food stalls at small distances serving to the participants and to the community. Everyone passing by gets to eat Langar or Prasada. People form huge queues to take Prasada. Kids are given chocolates and other sweets.
I too went with my kids to enjoy the procession in my local residential area. As soon as the noise of crackers became loud, we went to see a Palki Sahib beautifully decorated with flowers, band men and many horses. Children could also take a ride on these horses. There was police trying to control the traffic and ensure the smooth running of procession. We stood in queues to get Prasada. Kids were very excited to get it. They had it immediately after reaching home and just loved it. There were Chole Kulche, Roti Saag, Gulgule, Jalebis, sweet rice and Pulao. It was a very happening day for us both in terms of seeing the procession and eating Langar.
I felt good as I was able to introduce a very important and interesting celebration of our society.
